The first generation bB was based on the Toyota Vitz and the development was led by Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada.
While the box-shaped mini MPV was initially targeted towards Japanese men in their twenties, it is also popular with women buyers.
Production of the bB occurred between January 2000 and April 2005 at the Takaoka plant in Toyota, Aichi.
The bB Open Deck was a coupe utility version of the bB.

Toyota Modellista International has announced that in line with the minor change to the bB, it will release customized bB-based vehicles “bB TRD sports M,” “bB Street Billet,” and “bB Speed Tourer,” as well as customized parts for the bB, at Netz Toyota and Toyota Modellista stores nationwide.
This product comes in a variety of styles, from sporty models that focus on driving performance to parts that allow for fun dressing up, and was developed for users who want a bB that is truly their own.
The TRD Sport M has achieved a 10PS power increase by total tuning of the intake and exhaust systems and increasing the mid-low speed torque. The adoption of a special sports suspension that combines a sporty ride comfort has achieved stable cornering performance and linear operability.
